Farm Update: “Frost Date” (w/ photos!)

Last we checked, the south central PA frost date was May 2nd. Which means we’re only 10 or so days late with this update 😂.

We are moving at light speed. Rather, our environment is moving at light speed, and we’re trying to keep up:

- We’ve planted (in the ground) about a third of the seedlings, transplanted (into bigger pots) a third, and still have a third in egg cartons. The garlic we planted last fall appears (above ground) to be doing exceptionally well.

- Speaking of planting, you might remember the incredible weed situation in our garden plots. We’re working consistently to dig up each weed – no spraying in the garden, needless to say. We’re making progress.

- Chicks are about two and a half weeks old. I’ve never seen living things grow so quickly – wow.

- I built the chicken tractor. It turned out quite nicely except the wheels don’t work as I hoped. No worries – we have a “Chicklift” enroute!

- This is the season for bee swarming and moving, and wouldn’t you know a colony moved into the wall of our house! As an aspiring beekeeper, I knew to contact the York County Beekeepers Association. A local beekeeper is coming to “cut out” the bees soon. If there is honey, we get to keep it. #winning

- We have water at the barn (near the garden plots). Not an insignificant achievement – I understand water is important for plants 😁.

- We have several dead trees identified for removal. We’ll turn most of them into wood chips for the garden and other landscaping.

Interestingly, some of the most enjoyable things I’ve done recently entail repurposing or reusing what would otherwise be trash. Steel rods for the garden trellises, wood for the chicken tractor, as well as our ongoing (although as yet unsuccessful) composting efforts. It feels amazing to use something again rather than to throw it away.

We’re already planning ahead for next year. Our pasture will become home to wildflowers for sure. And, maybe a ruminant? Too early to say 😁.

Stay safe this season, and enjoy the warmer weather 👨‍🌾🇺🇸.
